The jewel of the Coghinas River
It is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful, elusive, and thrilling sightings you can experience during our boat excursion. The Kingfisher appears without warning—often just seconds after you’ve heard its cheerful, sharp, piercing trill, as if announcing that it will grant you only a fleeting glimpse. Then, in a sudden burst of colour—metallic green and electric blue across its back, and a vivid orange glow on its belly—a fast, low streak skims the water’s surface, tracing impossible trajectories for the untrained eye.
The Kingfisher is widespread across Europe and also breeds in North Africa and Asia Minor. Populations from the northernmost areas typically migrate to the Mediterranean region to overwinter, including Sardinia. The Foce del Coghinas is one of the preferred wintering destinations for many of these individuals—making it an exceptional place to observe this species in a pristine wetland setting.
